Jack Trice Legacy Scholarship

1. Recipients shall be graduates of a high school in the Cleveland Municipal School District in Cleveland, Ohio, as permitted by Federal and State law and University policy. Preference shall be given to students who graduate from East Technical High School in Cleveland, Ohio.
2. Recipients shall have a minimum cumulative high school grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
3. Recipients shall be first-generation college students.
4. Recipients shall have completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
5. Recipients shall submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher, coach, or mentor as determined by the administering authority.
6. Recipients shall submit essays on both topics below:
a. As an African American student-athlete in the 20th century, Jack experienced discrimination, from being separated from the team for meals and housing to how he was treated by his opponents. Yet, he remained committed to his team. He wrote a letter the night before his last game saying, “Everyone is expecting me to do big things. I will!” Please describe the challenges and barriers you have faced in pursuing your educational opportunities and how these experiences inform your worldview, academic goals, and future engagement on Iowa State’s campus. b. Please describe your leadership experience and/or significant involvement in an organization that is open to all, but whose mission is to advance the success and expand opportunities for historically underserved populations in higher education. In your response, highlight the scope of your contributions, the impact of your work, and how it has shaped your life experience.
This award shall be made available to full-time students of incoming first year class standing.
