Supplemental Questions
  1. Students wishing to be considered for scholarships from the Department of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Molecular Biology (BBMB) should apply to this opportunity. By answering the questions in this opportunity, BBMB students will be automatically considered for most BBMB department scholarships (see exceptions below). Students with a BBMB departmental renewing scholarship are required to complete this application each academic year.

Students wishing to be considered for the following scholarships need to complete these separate steps:
    (1) Viola Vorhies NIA Research Award: Submit contact information for a faculty research mentor who has agreed to provide a letter of support on your behalf.
    (2) Ana and Ed McCracken Undergraduate Research Fellowship: Complete Iowa State (main/default) and BBMB OneApp Opportunities, AND contact BBMB Undergraduate Research Coordinator.
    (3) Linder Family Undergraduate Research Fellowship: Complete application according to instructions on BBMB Undergraduate Scholarships & Awards website (https://www.bbmb.iastate.edu/bbmb-student-scholarship-opportunities)
    (4) Rob Stupka Memorial Scholarship (Fall nomination) or Rob Stupka Leadership Award (Spring nomination): Speak with Claire Kruesel (kruesel@iastate.edu), BBMB Undergraduate Program Coordinator.

To indicate your understanding of these conditions, check the appropriate checkboxes.
  2. Biochemistry major requirement and agreement
Students receiving scholarships/awards from the BBMB Department must be majoring in biochemistry. BBMB Scholarship/Award recipients agree to notify the department immediately if they switch out of the department.
  3. Transfer students: Upload your transcript(s) here.
Incoming transfer students from another college or university should upload an unofficial copy of your transcript in .pdf or .doc(x) format. If you attended more than one institution, upload transcripts from all relevant institutions.
(Do not use special characters or spaces when naming your document.)

  4. Describe your interest and career goals within the context of your major. What aspects of the field of biochemistry appeal to you most? (250 word maximum)
  5. In what activities related to your major have you participated? If you have recently graduated from high school, this might include science projects, competitions or clubs. This might include jobs, clubs, undergraduate research, learning communities, symposiums or seminars. (250 word maximum)
  6. If you have an interest and aptitude for research in your field, provide a statement regarding this interest including details of any existing research or related coursework. Also describe any interest in a career in research. (500 word maximum)
  7. If you are a first generation student [which means none of your parent(s)/guardian(s) has received a college degree], describe the impact this experience has on your pursuit of a degree.
  8. Standardized test scores: Commentary if not submitted
Iowa State University no longer requires the submission of standardized test scores (ACT or SAT) as part of the admission application. Iowa State strives to view students holistically and understands that standardized tests may be biased, inaccessible, and/or not represent a student's complete potential. If you did not submit a test score, we want to provide a space for you to comment on this choice or necessity, if desired. This answer is optional.
  9. First Reference All transfer student applicants for BBMB departmental scholarships must provide two references who are willing to provide a letter of support. This is the location to provide the name and email address of your FIRST of two references.

    Specific requirements:
    (1) At least one of your references should be a teacher/faculty member who can speak to your academic ability in biochemistry, chemistry, and mathematics. Ideally, both references will be able to speak about these topics, but if that is not possible, your second reference may the leader of an organization who can speak to your character, community contribution, etc. (e.g. employer/supervisor, sports coach, music conductor, youth group leader, club advisor). (2) If you are applying for a research award, one reference should be from the faculty member overseeing your research.

Please speak to your references ahead of time so they are prepared to upload the letter of support by the reference deadline (usually one week after your OneApp application is due).
  10. Second Reference All transfer student applicants for BBMB departmental scholarships must provide two references who are willing to provide a letter of support. This is the location to provide the name and email address of your SECOND of two references.
