George Washington Carver Full-Tuition Scholarship

One hundred full-tuition scholarships are awarded to incoming undergraduate US multicultural freshmen directly out of high school as part of the George Washington Carver (GWC) Scholarship program. This award opportunity is available to students enrolling at Iowa State for 2023. The scholarship is worth full undergraduate tuition for in-state students at a value of $8,678/year or out-of-state students at a value of $25,162/year based on current tuition rates.

January 10, 2023 is the deadline to apply. The application asks for two essays; the first has a limit of 3 sentences and the second has a limit of 500 words.

Students must fulfill one of the following 3 academic minimums to apply for the GWC scholarship:
1. Have a 3.70 cumulative high school grade point average (GPA) or
2. Present a minimum ACT composite score of 24 or
3. Present a minimum SAT total score of 1160 (Reading and Writing+Math)

Note, students with both a 3.70 cumulative high school GPA and a minimum ACT composite score of 24 or minimum SAT total score of 1160 (Reading and Writing+Math) will be more competitive in earning one of the 100 scholarships available.

To be considered, students must identify as American Indian or Alaskan Native, African American, Asian, Pacific Islander, Desi American, Hispanic or Latino/a/x, or Multi-Racial on the application for undergraduate admission. A student must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee, or asylee to qualify.

Students will be notified by March 2023 if they are selected to receive the GWC Full-Tuition Scholarship. The scholarship is renewable for an additional three years (for a total of four years or eight semesters of undergraduate study), provided the student maintains a cumulative 2.50 Iowa State grade point average, and each academic year completes 24 new credit hours at the university. Students must also remain continuously enrolled and enroll in and successfully complete the UST 105 and UST 106 courses. The scholarship is not need-based, but we ask all students who want to be considered for the award to file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

  1. <\strong>The application has three essay questions. You must complete this first required essay in three sentences. Then, answer one additional essay question; choose question 2 OR question 3. Answering all three essay questions will not benefit you. We will only review two essays.

    REQUIRED ESSAY (3 sentence limit): As a George Washington Carver Scholar, you'll walk across the stage at commencement. What are three things you want to have accomplished by that point? You should answer this question using no more than three sentences and we welcome creativity in your responses.

  2. ESSAY CHOICE 2 (500 word limit): “The secret of our success is that we never, never give up.” - Wilma Mankiller (Cherokee activist, social worker, community developer and the first woman elected to serve as Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation). Tell us about a time when you were less than successful at something. What were the circumstances? How did you respond to being less than successful? What lessons did you learn?

  3. ESSAY CHOICE 3 (500 word limit): “Preservation of one's own culture does not require contempt or disrespect for other cultures.” - Cesar Chavez (American labor leader, community organizer, businessman, and Latino American civil rights activist). What does it mean to you to be part of a community with others who hold historically marginalized identities? What challenges has it brought and how have you overcome them? What are the benefits?
